We were invited to the Proms last week. We were a bit miffed we’d paid to get our suits dry cleaned though because these weren’t the 'wave your flags and sing the national anthem' proms, but Proms of an Electric variety.
We basically went to see Hadouken! play a rather awkward BBC show at the Camden Barfly.
The Electric Proms being (in the words of the BBC) ‘the BBC’s annual music festival which features major and new artists creating unique performances’. Or (in our words) ‘Hadouken! being all shouty in front of some well to do BBC folk who have been bussed down from Wood Lane after work to make sure the Camden Barfly isn't completely empty'.
We’re sure plenty of people at the BBC have some Hadouken! on their company iphones, but last night there wasn’t a hint of neon or flash of a glowstick to be seen. No wonder the band looked a bit confused. Anyway, here are some things those nice people from the BBC will have learned about Hadouken!
- ‘Leap Of Faith’ is just as great in real life as it is on vinyl and cassette and cd and mp3 and USB etc etc
- A good track to jump up and down to is ‘Bounce’. The BBC do not bounce. Hadouken! do.
- Old (six months or so) favourite ‘That Boy, That Girl’ was a rousing finale. Now if they could mix that with the heavier sound of ‘Leap Of Faith’, they might have something rather exciting on their hands.
So we learned that Hadouken! are still rather exciting, and it would appear that the BBC are right behind them. It’s just a shame that events like Electric Proms stuff the room full of people who work for them, because really Hadouken! should be playing to people they can count as future fans.
Still, it’s nice the BBC people got a night out on our license fee – some of them might not have a job soon.
